zaffaCameroon has now become a habitual participating country in one of Africa’s most prestigious film awards taking place in the diaspora annually – the Zulu African Film and Academy Awards simply called ZAFAA. For three editions running, Cameroon has had news-making nominations as well as produced laureates and winning movies at the film contest. Dust was yet to settle on the Nchifor Valery (2011 best up-coming male actor) victory when news of latest Cameroonian nominations dropped in.  This year, the country has worn eight nominations.
Cameroon will therefore be contesting in the following categories – best  African film (On The Brim by Wa’a Musi), best feature film: (The Decision by Tanwie Elvis aka De Daddies), best short film (Supplication by Takong Delvis and Lost Ego by Wa’a Musi, best indigenous film (Shembeh by Cosson Chinepoh), best indigenous actress (Sende Bende), best indegenous actor (Ndiangang Emmanuel alias Lango), best director (Tanwie Elvis aka De Daddies). These films amd their makers will be battling for supremacy with those of several other countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.

« I’m very elated to have been nominated for the ZAFAA Awards this year and I’m confident I’ll make it, » Takong Delvis, director of Supplication told TIPTOPSTARS’ Editor when we got in touch with him for his initial impressions. « My fans only need to get to work by voting for me Supplication when the time comes, » he added.

To Tanwie Elvis, a ZAFAA nomination is not a surprised. «  This is undoubtedly the reward of hard work and I’m humbled and glad about it, » the Yaounde-based film director told us yesterday. Tanwie whom we called at a time he was in busy putting stuff together at the Mendong, Yaounde Penjo Entertainment studio told us he was sure to bag home  a ZAFAA trophy come October this year.

Meantime, TIPTOPSTARS is bracing to get the reactions of the other nominees including ZAFAA award winner Musing Derick whose 30th Day picked up a brilliant prize at the 2010 edition. It should be recalled that Musing is the first Cameroonian film maker to win a prize at the competition. He is known to have been the brain behind several successful film projects including Zintgraff and the Battle of Mankon, a telefilm produced by Godwin Nganah and currently being screened on Cameroon’s State-run television, CRTV.

On his part, Wa’a Musi is renowned for his knack and expertise in documentary films, some of which have picked up prizes at international awards. On the Brim, the nominated film was shot earlier this year on locations in Bamenda starring Epule Jeffery, Ruth Nkwenti and others.

The Decision, directed by Elvis Tanwie is one of the Cameroonian productions that hit the headlines. Its premiere in Yaounde a couple of months ago went down into the annals as one of the most brilliantly organized film events in recent years.

That Cosson Chinepoh’s initial attempt at production is taking the actor/producer this far is something to write home about. Until now, Cosson was known to be one of the finest actors in the country. He had whispered to this reporter time without number about plans to hit the producers’ lane. He featured in all the Premier Films productions – Trials of Passion II, My Successor and Audacity of Love.

The 2012 edition of ZAFAA will take place in London from October 19 to 20. Vote for the Cameroonian nominees ! TIPTOPSTARS will be back with details on this story.
